Mothers could never be happier than seeing their children's new tricks, especially when they are still under 2. Pardon me for using the term "tricks" but there is no more appropriate word for the new things they do, funny or gross... It's either they trick you to smile at the grossness of it or you trick them to do it over and over again to make you both laugh silly in the end.
My little July does have her own share of tricks, of course. When she was around 2 months, she would always giggle at the paper butterflies I made and pasted on our ceiling. Then a month or so after, she started sucking her hands...which escalated to toe-sucking after a few weeks. And that's not to mention her growing fondness to objects-turned-teethers, which is, basically, everything! Her favorite now are the hands of her baby doll, Baby Calvo (which was named by her cousin Enjoy) and the wooden bench in living room. On her fourth month, July started to use her walker (a baptismal gift from her Bio godparents) and bumped several toes in the house in the process including mine. Until now, she's so happy bumping off toes and touching/grabbing objects within her reach, especially the "baon snacks" of her Kuya Jee by our kitchen cabinet. But what really caught our attention is her "growling trick." At the sight of something interesting (or disgusting, for that matter) to her, she would start giving out low growling sounds until she gets what she wants. I don't know if it's just a "growling phase" of our baby or the dogs-next-door's fault!
Afraid she might start talking the "Ungta way" of Noah (ABS-CBN's primetime TV series, which is, by the way, a favorite side dish to our dinnertime ) or will soon meow or even moo to us after this, I usually hush her and diverts her attention. Talking softly to her is also another way of mine to stop her from making that "caninuous sound." Of course, I just made that funny term up to ease my mind of worry. But, this is serious stuff, grrr...grrr...
